Bulk Carrier Design Poses Decarbonization Challenge For Shipping

Industry experts and guests convened in Athens at a forum hosted by INTERCARGO to address the intricate challenges associated with decarbonizing existing vessels, with a particular focus on the design of bulk carriers, says an article published on intercargo website.

Unique Challenges Of Dry Bulk Carriers In Decarbonization

INTERCARGO Chairman, Dimitris Fafalios, welcomed over 200 attendees to the event titled ‘Solutions for Sustainable Dry Bulk Shipping.’ Fafalios underscored the distinctive challenges faced by the dry bulk carrier sector in achieving decarbonization.

He emphasized the itinerant nature of dry bulk carriers, serving numerous ports and anchorages globally, and the specific design constraints, especially in smaller geared vessels.

Fafalios explained, “The design of our bulk carriers, especially the smaller geared vessels, presents a cargo section forward of the engine room bulkhead where deck tanks for alternative fuels cannot be located. In addition, the deck cranes leave little room for the increased storage volumes required by alternative, low carbon, or zero-carbon fuels.”

Exploring Solutions, Real-Life Insights From Industry Leaders

The evening seminar, hosted at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center and supported by @TECHNAVA, delved into real-life technical and operational solutions to aid dry bulk operators in their decarbonization efforts.

Industry leaders from Nihon Shipyard (NSY), WinGD, Alfa Laval, and Oldendorff Carriers shared insights into shipbuilding, engine design for alternative fuels, marine technology, and the commercial implications of the EU-ETS scheme.

Dimitris Monioudis, INTERCARGO Technical Committee Vice Chairman, moderated the sessions, facilitating lively Q+A discussions after each presentation. Attendees, including INTERCARGO members, actively contributed their thoughts, concerns, and experiences.

Enthusiastic Participation Reflects Industry Commitment

Mr. Fafalios expressed enthusiasm about the high participation, stating, “Dry bulk ship owners are keen to play their part in helping to meet shipping’s ambitious decarbonization goals, and events like this enable us to share knowledge and experience.”
