Bunkering is Easier and Efficient Than Ever!! Thanks To the New Bunkering App!

  • A Bunkering App is launched by Gothenburg Port Authority.
  • This digital platform makes bunkering process simpler and effective.
  • It is developed in partnership with users and their regular inputs.
  • There is no longer a need for the intermediaries to act between the different parties.

A recent news report published by Gothenburg Port Authority in its website highlights its next venture into the technological development – the ‘Bunkering App’.  This is a digital solution that makes the bunkering at the Energy Port easier and more efficient.

Necessity is the mother of invention

Port of Gothenburg Energy Port is the largest open access energy port in the Nordic region. Being one of the largest bunkering hubs, it handles, over 2,500 calls and more than 23 million tonnes of energy products each year.  To simplify the procedures and increase its efficiency, the Gothenburg Port Authority has developed the new ‘Bunkering App’.

Advantages of the App

  • It is available to all bunkering operators at the Energy Port.
  • It helps in submitting the advance bunkering notification using the app rather than reporting manually via email and phone.
  • It also shows available collection points for loading marine fuel onto bunker vessels.
  • It also compiles bunkering statistics, facilitating the work of the Swedish Maritime Administration Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) and other organisations at the port.

Partnering with users to develop the App

The development of the App is done in partnership with users.  Testing has also been done with selected users from January. They have contributed their valuable inputs in the lead-up to the official rollout of the App.

The bunkering company Bunker One is one of the participating companies that now uses the app as part of its regular operations.

Overall, I think the app is already working very well, although the coastguard and VTS notification function needs to be more user-friendly. Booking quay space and the quay plan are excellent, giving us better foresight, which in turn helps us in our day-to-day work,” said Karolina Skoglund, bunker operator at Bunker One.

No more or lesser intermediaries

The App saves time as the Energy Port’s security coordinators, no longer need to act as intermediaries between the different parties. As the bunker operators administer quay bookings independently, all that is required is process verification.

We are confident that using the app will help boost efficiency and maximise the use of our bunker quays. But we would like to point out that it is not our intention to use the app to replace daily contact with our customers, which will continue to be an important part of our relationship,” said Dan-Erik Andersson, Head of Operations at the Energy Port.

Digital development – a stepping stone

The bunkering app is a further key step in the endeavour to enhance digitalisation and automation at the Energy Port.  Earlier, the port developed a new digital process control system.  Its main purpose is to streamline pumping via the extensive pipeline network at the Energy Port.

Development of digitalised work permits is currently under way, making coordination of operations at the Energy Port even more effective.
