A double naming ceremony was held in August for two 174,000-m3 LNG carriers at South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), reports Riviera Maritime Media.

Naming ceremony for vessels

BW Group reported the two Singapore-flagged LNG carriers are equipped with MAN Energy Solutions’ two-stroke, dual-fuel Diesel-cycle ME-GI propulsion and full reliquefaction systems.

Both vessels will go on charter immediately, with BW ENN Snow Lotus delivered to ENN and BW Cassia to BP. ENN Group vice chairman Zhang Jin and BP Trading & Shipping executive vice president Carol Howle served as the godmothers for BW ENN Snow Lotus and BW Cassia, respectively.

One of the new ships, BW Cassia, is reportedly equipped with a DSME-developed scrubber system designed for a carbon capture pilot. The proprietary technology will capture 50 kg/h CO2 and store it on board in dedicated tanks.

DSME reported receiving a special bonus worth US$2M from BW Group chairman Andreas Somen Pao, as a sign of gratitude for the high quality and compliance with the delivery time.

It was an expression of gratitude for building a high-quality LNG carrier despite the burdensome situation due to a sharp rise in the construction cost of shipbuilders due to the recent rise in steel prices. The win-win partnership that has been trading with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for over 30 years has been demonstrated”, said DSME in a press statement.

A strengthening partnership

BW is a long-time customer of the South Korean shipyard, having placed orders for 71 ships, including 28 crude oil carriers and 25 LNG carriers, since 1986.

Commenting on the bonus, Mr Pao said, “Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering is not just a shipyard for orders, but a business partner of BW. Our partners are old friends in overcoming temporary difficulties. I hope that your support will be a strength.”

DSME president Park Doo-sun said, “We had a hard time due to Covid-19 and a strike at subcontractors, but after returning after the summer vacation and trying to make up for fairness, we have held the naming ceremony. The bonus will be used for the employees who have worked hard to make up for the process, and we will repay you with an excellent ship by completing the remaining process well“.
