Maiden Voyage of BYD Explorer No.1: A Dual-Fueled PCTC

The maiden voyage ceremony for BYD Explorer No.1, a 7,000 CEU LNG dual-fuel pure car, truck carrier (PCTC), took place on January 15 at the Port of Shenzhen. Built by CIMC Raffles, this car carrier is the first of its kind from a Chinese shipyard, designed to transport domestically produced cars.

Technological Innovation and Green Contributions

Li Minggao, Vice President of CIMC Raffles, emphasized a commitment to technological innovation and reducing carbon emissions in collaboration with partners. BYD Explorer No.1 features dual-fuel capabilities, utilizing liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the main engine and generators to significantly cut nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxide emissions.

Features of BYD Explorer No.1

The vessel, resembling a “floating three-dimensional garage,” boasts impressive dimensions: 199.9 meters in length, 38 meters in width, a design draft of 8.6 meters, and a speed of 19 knots. With 13 decks, it can carry 5,449 new vehicles. The use of low-resistance methylsilane antifouling paint technology contributes to a 5% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Environmental Accolades: DNV Classification and IMO Compliance

BYD Explorer No.1 has earned classification by DNV, showcasing its energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and efficient design. The entire ship’s energy-efficiency design ensures that carbon dioxide emissions meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) 2025 Phase III requirements ahead of schedule, achieving a 30% reduction in the carbon intensity of new ships.

Impact on China’s Auto Export Industry

The delivery of BYD Explorer No.1 marks a groundbreaking era for China’s auto export industry, as it signals the country’s capability to transport domestically built cars. This development aligns with China’s government’s strategic plan to promote high-end, intelligent, and green manufacturing industry growth.

China’s Dominance in Car Carrier Shipbuilding

Chinese shipyards have dominated the global market for car carriers, securing 97.7% of the market share in the first half of 2023. This surge in orders aligns with China’s position as the world’s largest automobile exporter in 2023, surpassing Japan. The growing demand for car carriers is expected to be driven by increased vehicle trade and the rising share of pure electric/hybrid vehicles.
