Nanol Technologies, the maker of patented high-performance lube oil additive, announced that the vessel MV Seagard, a RO-RO Cargo vessel used the lubricant additive on its main engine and thus proved a 2% reduction in fuel consumption.  Reports claim that this test was overseen by Lloyds register.

This project and data analytics was initiated by the charterers and operators of the ship and the European shipping company Transfennica.  The vessel was capturing data for a total of 4 month period during which the vessel was on same route and engine settings.

The first two month period was into data aggregation without using the Nanol lubricant additive and the records/performance was stored after analysis.  The next 2 month period, the same was repeated but after using the Nanol lubricant additive in the main engine.

Since most of the external and internal variables are almost kept to constant, the performance improvement was accurately quantified and verified.  This analysis showed a statistically significant reduction in fuel consumption between the two periods, averaging a 2.01% reduction in fuel use when Nanol was present in active quantities

The verification of the results of Nanol’s technology has lead Transfennica to continue further testing of its use on the M/V Seagard and consider expanding it to other vessels in its fleet. The groundbreaking results have also helped Nanol secure the opportunity to meet with 100 venture capitalists to support its future growth and development.  Nanol was selected from over 1,200 applicants as one of only 50 businesses to be invited to Start-Up Fest’s Investor Tour in Amsterdam.

Johan von Knorring, Founder and CEO, Nanol Technologies commented: “Based on previous test results by more than ten shipping companies and more than 13,000 hours of operational use, Nanol has long been convinced that our patented lubricant additive delivers immediate economic benefits in terms of fuel-efficiency as well as the long-term gain of prolonging key engine component lifetimes.  While Nanol brings significant savings to our customers, we are very proud that we can help to save the environment by reducing emissions.”

Rogier Heijnsbroek, Operations Manager, Transfennica Ltd. commented: “Transfennica is committed to meeting high environmental standards, reducing emissions and improving the energy efficiency of our fleet.  With this in mind we always give consideration to operational tools and technologies that can help us meet these goals.  However, we require investment certainty to enable us to make these decisions.  Analysis gives us the tools for this decision making and it is our intention to continue testing Nanol’s technology based on verifiable facts.”

With the above news, it is proven that the charterers and ship operators are looking for an energy efficient ships.  IMO, on the other end has mandated the fuel consumption reporting rule.  With all these around the corners, it is time that the ship managers should make a bold move and think condition monitoring and metering as an investment and a great way to convince ship owners.  In fact, adopting such new technology means you care more for the ships and the environment.

Isn’t it evident?

It is time that companies adopt to such new technologies to make the vessel energy efficient.  However, any such investment and modifications adopted proves to be worthy only when the performance and other energy indicators are measured.  VEEMS (Viswa Energy Efficiency Management System) is one such tool which can help you to find, measure and quantify the savings in real-time.

VEEMS (Viswa Energy Efficiency Management System) has been successfully installed onboard some of the leading German Ship Management Companies.

“The ship managers are happy and the ship staffs are even more happy as the reporting system with all KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) for energy efficiency are well structured and thus no hard work for the ship’s staff”, says Viswa Lab R&D team, who are proud and claim that VEEMS – a system designed by mariners for the mariners.

“VEEMS made our reporting so easy.  A Ship typically needs to report to charterers, Owners, managers and now with energy efficiency coming in, we have even more reports.  VEEMS makes this process transparent and easy, where the reports are created at a button click”, says the Master of a vessel, which is managed by one of the leading German ship management company.
