On June 28, Mauritian authorities reportedly brought in an American marine salvage and demolition expert, Gary Demarsh of  Demex International, to find means of using explosives to release the grounded bulker Benita.

  • Tugs from Five Oceans Salvage (FOS)  will use a combination of mechanical devices and towing to remove the grounded bulker from the rocks.
  • Salvage tug of Ionian Sea FOS  will pull the bulker by the bow to prevent it from tipping over, since it lost both anchors.
  • The Coral Sea FOS is under way from Fujairah, UAE and expected to join by Thursday.

Salvage divers have carried out a number of dive inspections in order to further assess the extent of the damage.  As previously reported, a number of tanks have taken in water but the MV Benita appears to be stable and remains firmly aground.
