Can Wärtsilä’s Hybrid System Really Cut Fuel Use By 40%?

The bulk carrier Misje Vita is the latest step on Misje Rederi’s journey to build one of the world’s cleanest and most sustainable fleets. Why did the company choose to go hybrid, and how much fuel might they save in the process?

Wärtsilä HY hybrid system

The efficient heart of the Misje Vita is the Wärtsilä HY hybrid system, which combines engines and batteries and is designed to optimize the propulsion system’s response to changing conditions. This greatly enhances the vessel’s fuel efficiency and overall performance.

Because the Wärtsilä HY hybrid system has a high level of flexibility, it allows the engine to operate in the most efficient way possible, saving fuel and emissions. 

It also allows the Misje Vita to sail in and out of port and carry out cargo operations purely on battery power. 

This helps the vessel to comply with ever-stricter port emissions regulations. In addition, it means there is less need to use the auxiliary engines during operation, which has a direct impact on the vessel’s CII rating.

Hybrid system features

The Misje Vita was designed by Wartsila Ship Design, and Wärtsilä supplied the complete hybrid system including:

  • Wärtsilä 20 main engine
  • Wärtsilä NOx Reducer
  • power transmission system and electrical and automation systems
  • controllable pitch propeller, 
  • Wärtsilä ProTouch bridge control system
  • hybrid battery solution and energy management system (EMS).

Wärtsilä also supplied the integrated automation system (IAS) as well as the navigation and communication systems.

Highly complex system integration project

The EMS is a very important component of the hybrid system. It maximises efficiency because it optimises the energy flows between the power sources, consumers, and storage in an intelligent way. 

Although this was a highly complex system integration project, having a single supplier made it simpler for Misje Rederi. 

“Misje Rederi knew that the key to success was having a single partner that could supply and integrate a complete system. They also wanted to have experts close by to support them. 

Therefore, our local presence was a big plus for this project, and creates high expectations for our excellent service team” says Roy Helge Stavland, General Manager at Wärtsilä Norway.

Fuel savings of up to 40% 

The 5000 dwt bulk carrier was built in Colombo, Sri Lanka with Wärtsilä and the shipyard cooperating closely throughout the construction process.

These new additions to the fleet will help the company to improve the environmental performance of its fleet and achieve its ambitious sustainability goals.
