Climate change affects Canada now more than ever. The government of Canada is taking steps to make the country greener through transportation, resilient supply chains, and more ready to fuel economic growth while promoting jobs, reports Government of Canada.

Investment Announcement

Today, Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, has announced an investment of up to $25 million for the Halifax Port Authority that supports the financing of environmental sustainability, efficient supply chain operations, and decarbonization of the sector in general.

Green Shipping Corridor Program

Funding to the tune of $22.5 million comes under the Green Shipping Corridor Program to drive the development of the Halifax-Hamburg green shipping corridor. Some of the items include:

  1. Preparing to host and potentially refuel alternative fuel-powered vessels
  2. Installing a hydrogen production facility
  3. Electrifying port equipment to lower emissions
  4. Buying an electric rail locomotive and launching an incentive program to switch freight traffic from road to rail

Ship to Shore Crane Infrastructure Project

Additional funding of $2.5 million has been provided under the National Trade Corridors Fund for the Ship-to-Shore Crane Infrastructure project. This funding is intended to:

  1. Relieve congestion in supply chains
  2. Increase terminal capacity
  3. Enable faster and more efficient service for larger vessels at the Port of Halifax
  4. Benefits to Supply Chain and Economic Growth

Clean port operations and infrastructures would enhance supply chain efficiency by taking congestion away from the Port. Improving terminal capacity and optimizing operations through modernized infrastructure will straighten logistics, ease the passage of goods, and support economic growth and job creation in Nova Scotia’s maritime sector.

Government/Industry Cooperation

Transport Canada is working with industry stakeholders, coastal communities, Indigenous partners, and environmental organizations to create a cleaner, more sustainable future for maritime transport. This collaboration aims to strengthen supply chains and ensure a more resilient and efficient economy for all Canadians.

Green Shipping Corridor Program

The Green Shipping Corridor Program provides funding for projects that help to develop green shipping corridors and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the marine sector along Canada’s key waterways. The program:

  1. Reduces barriers to adopting emission-reducing equipment and infrastructure
  2. Incentivizes industry-led partnerships and investments to accelerate greenhouse gas emission-reduction technologies and infrastructure
  3. Reduces investment risks in low-carbon and net-zero emission ship technology and marine fuels for the domestic vessel fleet
  4. Developing capacity among Canadian vessel owners/operators to plan and implement next-generation low-carbon ship technology and marine fuels

National Trade Corridors Fund

The National Trade Corridors Fund is a competitive, merit-based program for critical transportation infrastructure. Since 2017, a total of $4.1 billion has been committed to improving Canada’s roads, rail, air, and marine shipping routes to foster domestic and international trade.

Ship-to-Shore Crane Infrastructure Project Impact

Since June 2024, when the Ship to Shore Crane Infrastructure was completed, the Port of Halifax has been able to effectively achieve the following:

  1. Reduced turnaround for offloading and loading vessels
  2. Handled more container ships

Such an investment gives Canada strength in its transportation networks, ensures economic growth, and makes the Port of Halifax a key leader in green and efficient maritime logistics.
