A proud moment unfolded at Vancouver Shipyards as a gigantic 30-by-60-foot Canadian flag was officially raised on a newly completed outfitting pier, serving as a powerful symbol of national pride and shipbuilding excellence, reports Seaspan.

Flag Installation Overlooks HMCS Protecteur

Waving proudly above the HMCS Protecteur, the longest naval vessel ever constructed in Canada, the flag now flies atop a 120-foot pole, creating a new landmark on the North Shore waterfront, right next to the iconic ‘Big Blue’ gantry crane.

Collaborative Effort Behind the Flagpole

The flagpole installation was a true team effort between Vancouver Shipyards and Fraser River Pile and Dredge (FRPD). The pole was delivered in four sections and expertly welded on-site by Seaspan welders and ship fitters, with essential support from the rigging team to ensure the flag mechanism operated smoothly.

From Vision to Reality

The idea to raise a Canadian flag at the site began with a conversation between Executive Chairman Kyle Washington and Senior VP of Operations Jim Favreau. “After three years in the making, I can say it was well worth the wait. With the outfitting pier completed, the flag is now in place where it will be clearly visible from across the water in Vancouver,” Kyle said. As he pressed the button to hoist the flag, four Seaspan employees, including a rigger and a welder who helped install the pole, stood by to steady it.

Honouring Canada and Its Shipbuilders

“There’s a real sense of pride in our workforce,” Jim said. “Not only did our team come together to make this installation happen the day before Canada Day, but it’s bigger than that. We’re all proud to be building ships in Canada, for Canada. It’s a fitting time to raise this Canada flag above our operations right here in North Vancouver.”

A Symbol of National Commitment

Seaspan is actively engaged in Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy. The new flag, which was raised just before Canada Day, now proudly waves above Vancouver Shipyards, serving as a strong symbol of that mission and the commitment of the people who support it.
