Weekly Analysis: 19 July 2024

  • Total Cancellations: 46 out of 691 scheduled sailings (7% cancellation rate) between week 30 (22 Jul-28 Jul) and week 34 (19 Aug-25 Aug).
  • Breakdown by Trade Route:
    • Transpacific Eastbound: 46% of cancellations
    • Asia-North Europe & Med: 28% of cancellations
    • Transatlantic Westbound: 26% of cancellations

Alliance-Specific Cancellations:

  • OCEAN Alliance: 19 cancellations
  • The Alliance: 8 cancellations
  • 2M Alliance: 7 cancellations
  • Non-Alliance Services: 12 cancellations

On average, 93% of ships are expected to sail as scheduled over the next five weeks.

Ocean Freight Insights

  • Drewry’s WCI Composite Index: Increased WoW by 1% to $5,937, which has been up by 118% since early May.
  • Rate Changes:
    • Transpacific: Rates unchanged WoW.
    • Asia-Europe & Med: Rates up 2% WoW.
    • Transatlantic: Rates down 1% WoW.

Market Dynamics:

  • Supply and Demand: Strong demand persists, but increased supply on Transpacific routes (seven new services since May) has tempered potential rate increases.
  • Route-Specific Issues:
    • Asia-North Europe & Med: Port congestion and adverse weather drive rate increases.
    • South Asia: Delays, backlogs, and equipment shortages, particularly of 40ft containers in Bangladesh, due to widespread congestion.
