Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS), part of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), recently handed over the 114,000-dwt Aframax/LR2 tanker, Cape Tainaron, to its new Greek owner, Cape Shipping, on September 3rd. This marks a significant milestone as it’s the first vessel SWS has built and delivered for the company, reports Riviera.

Second Vessel Expected for Delivery

Looking ahead, SWS is set to deliver another Aframax/LR2 tanker of the same design, reportedly named Cape Antibes. In late 2023, Cape Shipping was associated with newbuilding contracts in China for Aframax/LR2 vessels, indicating its comeback in the tanker market.

Expanding Tanker Orders in China

Since re-entering the newbuilding scene, Cape Shipping has been busy placing orders for additional LR1, Aframax, and Suezmax tankers across various Chinese shipyards, with deliveries scheduled all the way through 2027.

Fleet Growth Beyond Newbuildings

While Cape Tainaron is the first newbuilding delivered directly to Cape Shipping, the company has also been growing its fleet through acquisitions. Earlier this year, they acquired two MR2 tankers that were built in 2024 and 2025, originally ordered by Evalend Shipping.

Cape Shipping’s Background

Established in 1987 in Athens, Cape Shipping initially concentrated on the dry cargo sector before branching out into container vessels. According to Equasis data, the company currently operates a fleet of 15 ships, which includes seven bulk carriers and eight container vessels.

Container Vessel Sales to CMA CGM

In a significant shift for their fleet, Cape Shipping has sold several container vessels to CMA CGM. The French shipping giant acquired Cape Monterey (built in 2015), Cape Araxos (2016), and Cape Quest (2017), which have since been renamed CNC Padma, CMA CGM Fuji, and CMA CGM Quest.

Current Fleet Composition

Cape Shipping still retains ownership of four container ships built between 2015 and 2017, while the remainder of its fleet consists of vessels delivered after 2020.
