Indonesian wooden fishing boat sank after contacting Capesize bulk carrier at dawn Nov 17 in Indian ocean, Indonesia, reports Maritime Bulletin.
What happened?
Indonesian 15-meter wooden fishing boat KERINCI INDAH 02 sank after contacting Capesize bulk carrier CAPE KALLIA at dawn Nov 17 in Indian ocean. The incident happened some 55 nm SE of southernmost Bali island, Indonesia.
Bulk carrier was en route from China to Hedland Australia, apparently in ballast.
Slight contact or brush enough
For the mammoth size bulk carrier and her ballast condition, and the size and wooden hull of a fishing boat, just a contact or brush would have been enough for the tiny boat to capsize and sink.
It is also not clear if bulk carrier watch didn’t spot boat at all until contact ( it was dawn, i.e. restricted visibility), or spotted it too late to undertake effective evasive maneuver.
Rescue efforts
CAPE KALLIA, without sailing away after the accident, turned back and rescued 7 fishermen out of 11 who were on board. According to reports, 4 still remain missing.
About the carrier
As the bulk carrier was ordered to return to Indonesian waters after the accident, she sailed back to Lombok Strait. As of 1100 UTC Nov 18, she remained anchored off Mataramo, Lombok island, Lombok Strait.
