The captain of tanker vessel deployed in pumping out oil from a sunken ship was handed over a two-year sentence for smuggling oil.
What happened?
The captain of tanker “Lassea”, which was employed in pumping oil out from the sunken vessel “Agia Zoni II” in Saronikos, which sank in Saronic gulf causing a major oil spill was found to be guilty in possession of a cargo consisting of mixed oils without proper documentation.
On Thursday, the captain of the vessel was handed over a two-year suspended sentence by a judge in Piraeus. The first mechanic of the vessel was initially detained but after investigation he was found to be innocent. According to the court, one of the vessel’s holds was found to contain 98% water and 2% mixed oils, while the other one contained 1% fuel (mazut) and 10% mixed oils; unpaid customs duties were calculated at around 15,500 euros.
The vessel “Lassea” is currently docked off the Perama shore in Piraeus, awaiting orders to discharge its cargo.
