Cargo Engine Failure Halts Traffic in Istanbul Strait

8

A general cargo ship en route from Russia experienced engine failure in the Bosphorus Strait, a critical maritime passage, necessitating an emergency response that temporarily halted vessel traffic in one of the world’s busiest waterways.

Rescue Operation and Traffic Disruption

The incident occurred off Umuryeri in the Istanbul Strait while the 98-meter-long vessel was sailing from Russia. The malfunction led to the immediate disruption of maritime traffic in both northbound and southbound directions of the Bosphorus, which is a vital chokepoint connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean. Under the coordination of the Directorate General of Coastal Safety’s Istanbul Vessel Traffic Services Center, a pilot and two tugboats were quickly deployed to the scene to secure the disabled ship.

Safety Restoration

The response teams successfully towed the vessel to the Buyukdere anchorage, ensuring it was safely secured and preventing any further hazard in the narrow strait. Following the safe anchoring of the general cargo ship, authorities swiftly announced that vessel traffic in the Istanbul Strait was reopened in both directions, minimizing the duration of the disruption to global shipping. The swift and coordinated action by Türkiye’s Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure ensured the continuation of safe transit through this key global trade route.
