Cargo Freighter Capacity Increased By Japan’s ANA

Japanese airline company All Nippon Airways (ANA) will strengthen its air cargo business, increasing the company’s freighter aircraft capacity.

Increasing cargo freighter capacity

ANA will replace its two Boeing 767F freighters with two larger Boeing 777-8Fs from 2028 onward, to meet growing transport demand especially between Asia and North America, the company said in its management strategy for April 2023-March 2026 released in February. 

The company is targeting to increase its cargo handling volume by 10pc in the 2025-26 fiscal year compared to 2019-20.

New freighter

The new freighters can carry larger cargoes, such as semiconductor manufacturing equipment and prototypes for trade fairs, as well as smaller cargoes including motor and semiconductor parts and medicines. ANA will try to sign more multi-year contracts with major customers, it said.

Cargo spaces in its aircraft have fallen as deliveries of narrow-body passenger aircraft rise, but the new freighters will make up for the decline in capacity, ANA said.

ANA’s current cargo capacity

ANA currently operates 11 freighters, nine Boeing 767Fs and two Boeing 777Fs.

Narita airport in Chiba prefecture, Japan’s largest airport for air freight, will be ANA’s hub connecting the two regions. 

The airport handled around 2.4mn t of air cargo in 2022, down by 9pc from 2021, but up by 16pc from 2019.

Cargo volume at the Narita was at a record high of around 2.6mn t last year. Shippers turned to airlines to transport their goods because of limited container ship availability and port congestion.
