The International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code outlines “hold cleanliness” requirements for listed cargoes. Cargo schedules generally specify cleanliness standards, and some cargoes may have specific advice, like SULPHUR (formed, solid), indicating no washing with seawater.

Hold Inspections

Regular inspections and maintenance within a documented planned maintenance system are essential. Holds should be inspected after each discharge and cleaning, with defects noted and promptly repaired. Inspection areas include hold framing, hatch covers, paint coating, bilge system, tank top areas, pipework, firefighting systems, and more.

Hold Washing

A thorough risk assessment by the master is crucial for safe hold cleaning. This includes evaluating chemical use, providing accurate data (SDS), implementing job-specific risk assessments, toolbox talks, and using proper protective equipment. Cleaning should start from the top down during water washing and comply with local regulations regarding wash water and runoff.

Pollution Prevention

MARPOL guidelines regulate preventing pollution from ships. Hold wash water should be discharged to a suitable reception facility. Accurate records of hold cleaning operations, including date, time, method, and chemicals used, are crucial for compliance evidence in case of a claim.

Barrier Coatings

For corrosive cargoes, a barrier coating can be applied to hold steelwork. Proper application and removal of barrier coatings, such as slip-coat or hold-block, following manufacturers’ instructions, protect the paintwork and ease residue removal.

Post Cleaning Inspections

Thorough inspections post-hold cleaning ensure compliance with regulations. Well-lit conditions aid in identifying remaining residues or areas requiring further cleaning. Detailed documentation, including photographs or videos, is vital for evidence in disputes or claims.
