Cargo Inflamed by Hot Exhaust Pipe of Generator

On August 12, a fire triggered onboard a barge after its cargo came in contact with a hot exhaust pipe of a generator.

What happened?

The fire rescue team in Lingen was alerted after a barge ‘Janna’ caught fire. The barge was docked in the new port on the Dortmund-Ems-Canal.

Flammable cargo

The barge was loaded with sugar beet pellets when the incident occurred. The pellets were inflamed when they came in contact with the hot exhaust pipe of a generator.

Fire brought under control

The firefighters arrived on the spot and removed the smouldering pellets. The hot pellets were disposed and shoved overboard the barge.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the sequence of events leading to fire. None of the firefighters nor the crew members were injured during the incident.
