On Thursday, a cargo ship capsized while loading over-weight goods at a port in Yangon.
What happened?
The ship, MV Shwe Let Wa, running on Yangon-Sittway coastal route, sank at 06:20 p.m. local time while loading goods at Bargayar Port in Kyimyindine Township, west of Yangon.
Capsized due to overweight:
The ship is to have capsized due to the unbalanced weight of the goods which include two motor cars and heavy barrels of oil, the ship began to lean and then capsized, causing a loss of cargo worth some 100 million kyats (73,279 U.S. dollars).
Fortunately during the incident, the eight crew members onboard the ship were not injured.
Investigation underway:
The port authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the root cause of the accident. The authorities were also seen recovering lost goods in the area where the ship sank. The captain of the ship has been charged by law and arrested for further enquiry.
