A general cargo ship remains adrift after losing its propulsion power due to an engine failure.
What happened?
The general cargo ship BBC Shanghai lost propulsion power after an engine failure on 90 nautical miles northeast off East London, South Africa.
The vessel was en route from Durban to Lagos, but suffered engine problem and remained adrift. The crew did not immediately required assistance by the local authorities but tried to repair the problem and to restart the engine.
Tugged to safety:
After several hours it was estimated that they cannot repair the problem and the accident was reported to the local authorities. At the scene of the troubled freighter was sent salvage tug Shasa.
The tug assisted the cargo ship BBC Shanghai, taking her on tow and towed to East London. The freighter was successfully docked for repairs and safety inspection at the South African port.
No injuries reported:
Fortunately, during the accident, there were no injured people and no water pollution. The general cargo ship BBC Shanghai will remain at the port of East London for repairs and special survey, before the return in service and resume the voyage to Lagos, Nigeria.
