The Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Friday (15 October) said it had arrested a cargo ship for alleged illegal anchoring at around 10:03 am on Thursday, reports ManifoldTimes.
About the arrest
Johor State Maritime Director, First Admiral Nurul Hizam bin Zakaria, noted the cargo ship was spotted at a position of 9.1 eastern nautical miles at Tanjung Penawar, Johor.
The Panama-registered cargo ship was operated by 24 individuals consisting of Chinese Indonesian and Vietnamese crew aged between 18 years to 58 years of age.
An initial inspection found the Captain failing to present needed documents to the maritime authorities; he explained the vessel was waiting for further voyage instructions from its company.
Rules and regulations
If found guilty under Section 491B (1)(l) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952, individuals may be fined not exceeding RM 100,000 or face an imprisonment term of not more than two years, or both.
MMEA said it will continue to implement strict rules and regulations to ensure the safety and security of the country’s waters.
