A cargo ship has run aground in shallow waters off the coast of Camarines Sur, as confirmed by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) over the weekend, reports GMA.

Crew Declared Safe

In a statement from Coast Guard District Bicol, it was reported that all 13 Filipino seafarers aboard the LCT Golden Phoenix were declared “safe and in good health” following the incident that occurred on August 7.

Cause of the Incident

The Coast Guard indicated that strong winds, along with the prevailing currents, played a role in the grounding of the vessel near Barangay Matandang Siruma in San Miguel Bay. At the time of the incident, the ship was carrying construction materials.

Coast Guard Response

The PCG said it immediately responded after learning of the accident and coordinated with the local barangay. “Initial attempts to conduct a full inspection were deferred due to unfavourable sea conditions. The ship’s captain and shipping company representatives have since taken immediate action, including arranging for a hull inspection by divers and preparing necessary documentation for maritime procedures,” the PCG said.

Environmental Monitoring

While no oil spill has been reported in the area, the PCG is actively monitoring the waters to ensure environmental safety.
