2090

On 5th March 2017, a cargo ship reportedly ran aground while manoeuvring away from the berth.

What happened?

The cargo ship “Caledonia” ran aground in Constanta while she maneuvered away from berth 35-36 where she had loaded 10.678 tonnes of laminates.

The ship got stuck with the bow right within the port basin next to the berths RO4 / Ro5 and 39, close to the Farul Carol lighthouse and the historic building “Cuibul Reginei”.

Inspection underway:

Following the incident, an inspection was carried out at the hull which lasted about an hour.

Around 9.30 p.m. work began to unload a quantity of up to 1,000 tonnes of the cargo onboard to lighten the ship. It was then refloated with the help of three tugs before being taken to be safely berthed before it was loaded and ready for departure.

The ship had come into port on March 2 and was bound to Veracruz.
