On October 14, a cargo ship reportedly ran aground in rough seas after suffering from an engine failure.

What happened?

A 50,626 ton cargo ship ‘Harvest Sky’ ran aground 0.3 nautical miles off the coast of Taoyuan County. The ship was grounded after it suffered an engine malfunction and steering engines stopped functioning due to rough seas.

The vessel was carrying 19,068 tons of coal and 1,590 tons of diesel when it ran aground in bad weather.

Towed to safety:

The MPA received a notification of the incident from the 12th Offshore Flotilla. Since the vessel was reportedly found to be in a good condition the ship was decided to be towed to safety after a meeting was convened with the Coast Guard, the Taoyuan County Environmental Protection Bureau, and the Maritime and Port Bureau.

Crew members safe:

All the 21 crew members onboard the vessel were safe and any risk of pollution to sea was ruled out.
