On October 5, a cargo vessel reportedly sunk around midnight off the Sumatra coast.
What happened?
The cargo vessel ‘KM KTC 1’ with 3.050 tons limestone reportedly sunk few minutes past midnight, north of Karang Jamuang island located north of Surabaya.
The vessel which was enroute from the Jamrud Port in Tanjung Perak to Perawang, Pekanbaru, Central Sumatra when it started listing on its port side.
16 crew members rescued:
A distress call was raised by the captain of the ship and the Indonesian Navy dispatched patrol boats who rescued 16 crew members stranded on-board the vessel.
The reason for sinking may have been to overloading and not using appropriate dead weight for balancing the load. The 3.050 tons of limestone reportedly lies, half sunken off the Sumatra Coast.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of sinking. Fortunately, none of the crew members on board the vessel was injured. The patrol boats are constantly monitoring the situation to check for any oil spill in the vicinity.
