UK shipowner Carisbrooke Shipping has signed a shipbuilding contract with Dutch shipbuilder Thecla Bodewes Shipyards for the construction of a Labrax 7,280 dwt diesel-electric multipurpose dry cargo vessel.

The Netherlands-based shipyard said the diesel-electric propulsion system on board the vessel, in combination with the advanced power-management system, ‘minimises energy losses, reduces overall fuel consumption and reduces CO2 emissions.’
Thecla Bodewes noted that ‘this desired result has already been proven’ in the performance of the first three newbuild vessels for short sea shipping operator Vertom, the most recent of which, MV Vertom Tomma, was launched this summer.
In addition, the installed propulsion power on board of the Labrax vessels, said Thecla Bodewes, is ‘considerably lower’ compared to ships of equal cargo capacity and with conventional propulsion.
Carisbrooke Shipping’s order brings the Labrax dry cargo series to a total of 11 vessels build by the shipyard, 10 of which are built for Vertom Group. The Labrax vessel for Carisbrooke Shipping, hull number 11, is planned to be delivered in 2026.
