China Classification Society (CCS), Singapore-based SDTR Marine, and Shanghai’s Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) have jointly developed an ammonia-powered bulk carrier with a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 85,000.
Ammonia-driven carrier development
A cloud certification ceremony was conducted for the vessel, which is claimed to be the first of its kind in the world, on behalf of CCSHQ, the Chinese classification society that granted approval in principle (AIP) for the project.
As technology is developed in the shipping sector, ammonia is anticipated to serve as an alternative clean, green fuel that will meet green emission reduction rules.

Milestone green and sustainability project
SDTR CEO Gao Dehui stated: “This 85,000dwt ammonia-fuelled bulk carrier project is a milestone for SDTR’s Green and Sustainability Policy, of which is to develop a more environmentally friendly fleet is one of the key missions.
“We are looking forward to early implementation of the project with all parties’ involved cooperation.”
SDARI vice-president Zhou Zhiyong said that the company ‘applied the latest hydrodynamic and new energy technologies to this vessel’ with the aim of creating a star product that would lead the industry.
Last November, Maran Dry Management (MDM) reached a joint development project (JDP) agreement with class society RINA and SDARI to develop a new 210,000dwt bulk carrier that will run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen.
