In GALENA PARK, Texas (KTRK), A chemical spill was seen on a Tuesday at the Targa Resources dock on the Houston Ship Channel, causing a brief closure, reports abc 13.
Valve Malfunction Identified as Source
The leak occurred around 4 p.m. at Targa’s facility located at 12510 American Petroleum Road. According to the company, a valve malfunction led to the incident. “At this time, activity may be noticeable to the community,” The energy infrastructure corporation said during the leak. “We are coordinating with local officials and working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”
Butadiene Identified as Released Chemical
The Harris County Office of Emergency Services identified butadiene as the released chemical. The highly explosive gas is used widely in the manufacture of synthetic rubber.
The Leak Was Contained and the Channel was Reopened
The release of vapour ceased around 10 p.m. Tuesday. By 3 a.m. On Wednesday, the Coast Guard reopened the Houston Ship Channel to shipping.
Officials confirmed that the surrounding community was not in danger, that no shelter-in-place order was needed, and that no one was injured.
