Chemical Leak in Ship’s Engine Room Kills 1

A suspected chemical leak aboard a ship’s engine room resulted in the death of crew member.

What happened?

On 19 July, the leak reportedly occurred in the engine room of the vessel at Kuala Linggi around 5:30 pm.

Breathing difficulties:

The victim identified as T. Sathis, 31 developed breathing difficulties when he was working near the engine room aboard the ship and reportedly fell unconscious.

After sometime, 3 other crew members also complained of breathing difficulties but managed to seek assistance in a timely manner.

Fire rescue team retrieves victim:

Masjid Tanah Fire and Rescue Service Department operations commander, senior fire officer II Ismail Iskandar Shah Abdullah said, “Upon arriving at the scene, we were informed that there was a male victim who has fallen unconscious due to breathing difficulties at the engine room. A hazardous materials unit (Hazmat) team from the Alor Gajah fire-station, was also involved in the operation and succeeded in retrieving the victim at about 6.20pm”.

Investigation underway:

Unfortunately, the victim was declared dead on arrival by the medical officer. The 3 other crew members were rushed to the hospital for further medical assistance.

The authorities have initiated investigation to determine the cause of the leak and how the incident occurred.
