  • Chennai and Kamarajar ports will join India’s new container shipping line as equity partners
  • SCI and CONCOR will remain the main promoters of the project
  • The move aims to strengthen India’s maritime self-reliance.

India is planning a new national container shipping line to reduce dependence on foreign carriers and strengthen its maritime ecosystem. As part of this plan, Chennai Port Authority and Kamarajar Port Limited are set to become minority equity partners in the proposed shipping venture.

Role of Key Partners

The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) and Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) will hold the majority stake and lead operations. SCI will focus on vessel management, while CONCOR will support the project with its strong inland logistics, container handling, and rail connectivity. The two Tamil Nadu ports will contribute port-side support and financial participation.

Why Ports Are Being Included

Bringing ports into the ownership structure helps utilise their cash reserves and aligns port operations with shipping services. This integration is expected to improve cargo movement efficiency and strengthen coordination between sea and land transport.

What Lies Ahead

The final equity structure is expected to be confirmed soon, followed by a formal agreement between all partners. Once operational, the shipping line is expected to support India’s long-term maritime goals under Maritime India Vision 2047 and improve resilience in container trade.
