China Delivers Methanol Dual-Fuel Engine For World’s First Green VLCC

9

China has achieved a major milestone in green shipbuilding with the successful delivery of a 7G80MEC-LGIM-EGRTC methanol dual-fuel low-speed marine diesel engine by Dalian Marine Diesel Co., Ltd. (CSSC), following inspection and certification by the China Classification Society (CCS).

This advanced engine, rated at 32,970 kW with a top speed of 72 rpm, complies with IMO TIER II emission standards and will power the world’s first methanol dual-fuel intelligent VLCC, currently under construction by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC) for Haihong Shipping Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China Merchants Energy Shipping.

Green Power and Precision Engineering

The engine supports methanol-diesel dual-mode operation, seamless fuel switching, and performance under extreme conditions. CCS Dalian Branch was deeply involved throughout the R&D, manufacturing, and testing process, ensuring high quality and reliable performance through stringent protocol review and optimization.

CCS Commitment to Decarbonisation

CCS emphasized its commitment to supporting the maritime industry’s green transition, stating it will continue advancing the R&D, inspection, and certification of low- and zero-carbon marine power systems, and collaborate with industry players to promote sustainable shipping solutions.

This marks a significant leap in China’s leadership in clean energy maritime technology and sets a global benchmark for future methanol-powered large-scale vessels.
