  • Health experts are on high alert as a mysterious respiratory illness, likened to ‘walking pneumonia’ and ‘white lung pneumonia’, spreads across China.
  • With rising cases among children in northern regions, concerns mount over its potential global reach.
  • The World Health Organization is closely monitoring this ailment amid fears it could extend beyond China, sparking comparisons to managing Covid.

Sickness Outbreak

Since mid-October, the WHO has tracked a surge in respiratory illnesses among children in northern China.

November reports from the National Health Commission highlighted a rise in such cases, attributed to eased Covid restrictions and the onset of winter alongside known viruses like influenza, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2.

Concerns escalated on November 22 when undiagnosed pneumonia cases emerged in multiple children’s hospitals.

Experts Opinion

Health experts fear the illness could spread beyond China, prompting hospitals in India to prepare.

Rising pneumonia cases among 5 to 14-year-olds in the Netherlands, totaling 103 per 100,000, raise concerns. While uncertainty lingers on the disease’s pace, experts speculate on its potential arrival in Europe. However, virologists suggest Britain may not be heavily impacted.

Conflicting views emerge, with some experts doubting the existence of a new virus, while others, like Dr. Leana Wen, downplay global concern, stating the situation doesn’t resemble the emergence of Covid-19 in 2019.
