China has unveiled an ambitious plan to strengthen its western provinces through 15 targeted measures focused on enhancing logistical infrastructure. By building aviation hubs, expanding ports, and integrating transport systems, the initiative seeks to address regional disparities and bolster economic growth in the less-developed western regions, reports Reuters.
15 Measures to Transform Western Provinces
The General Administration of Customs announced 15 measures to develop China’s western regions by constructing logistical infrastructure.
These include enhancing international aviation hubs, building comprehensive bonded zones, and expanding ports to create a seamless integration of rail, air, river, and sea links.
Focus on Key Cities and Transport Hubs
Major cities like Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Xi’an, and Urumqi will see the development of international aviation hubs.
The initiative also emphasizes integrating bonded zones with ports and other transport networks to boost regional and international connectivity.
Addressing Regional Disparities
China’s western regions, which account for two-thirds of the country’s land area, have lagged behind their coastal counterparts economically.
The initiative aims to balance this disparity while addressing challenges like ethnic tensions and border security concerns in areas such as Xinjiang.
A Push for Rural Revitalization and Trade Connectivity
Building on previous efforts, China’s Politburo has called for a “new urbanization” of the West to rejuvenate rural areas, alleviate poverty, and strengthen energy resources.
Enhancing trade corridors to Europe and South Asia, including rail freight routes, is also a priority to increase global trade linkages.
