China Launches Its First Dual-Fuel Methanol Bunkering Vessel in Zhoushan

Manifold Times reports that China has launched its first dual-fuel methanol bunkering vessel at Zhoushan, marking a notable milestone in the development of alternative-fuel infrastructure for maritime operations.

The 7,500 metric-ton capacity vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel system enabling it to switch seamlessly between methanol and conventional marine fuel. Built to international ship-standards, the vessel has been outfitted with methanol bunkering capability and is intended to serve as a mobile “green station” in the China Greater Bay Area.

Following the launch, the vessel is scheduled for outfitting, equipment commissioning and sea trials, with delivery planned before the end of December. Once operational, it will support bunkering operations involving methanol and fuel oil within the Pearl River Delta and adjacent regions.

This development underscores the growing focus on shipping technology, alternative fuels and maritime decarbonisation as ship-owners and port operators seek to align with evolving regulatory frameworks and energy-transition goals. The region’s enhancement of bunkering infrastructure signals an important step toward scaling low-carbon operations and strengthening fuel supply chains.
