China has launched its largest fully electric bulk carrier, the Gezhouba, marking a major milestone in the country’s push to decarbonize inland waterway transport. The vessel was unveiled at a ceremony in Yichang on Thursday, underscoring the nation’s ongoing efforts to modernize and green its shipping industry along the Yangtze River.
Vessel Specifications and Capabilities
The Gezhouba measures nearly 130 meters in length and can carry more than 13,000 tonnes of cargo. It is powered by 12 lithium-battery units with a combined capacity of 24,000 kWh. The ship supports rapid battery replacement and can travel approximately 500 kilometers on a single charge.
Equipped with a smart control system, the vessel enables remote navigation and automatic berthing through multi-link communications. These features represent significant progress in autonomous and energy-efficient vessel design for inland waterways.
Technological Innovation and Environmental Benefits
Project experts noted that the Gezhouba validates core technologies for large-capacity batteries and distributed DC power systems for inland vessels. Compared to conventional ships, it is expected to save around 617 tonnes of fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2,052 tonnes annually.
The project aligns closely with China’s broader decarbonization objectives for the Yangtze River shipping corridor, which plays a vital role in the nation’s industrial and transport network.
Project Developers and Industry Context
The vessel was developed under the leadership of China Energy Engineering Corporation (Energy China) a state-owned enterprise operating in power generation, engineering, and infrastructure development. Its core subsidiary, China Gezhouba Group (CGGC), specializes in engineering, procurement, and construction projects, including hydropower and transportation infrastructure.
Another key participant, China Yangtze Power Co. (CYPC), part of China Three Gorges Corporation, manages major hydropower assets along the Yangtze River, including the Gezhouba and Three Gorges dams.
The launch of the Gezhouba highlights China’s growing leadership in sustainable maritime innovation. By combining advanced electrification technology with digital vessel management systems, the project demonstrates the potential for large-scale, zero-emission shipping solutions on the country’s most important inland waterway.
