China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) inks a shipbuilding contract with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC) for the construction of two VLCCS, reports Splash 247.

Fuel consumption

Delivery of the two VLCCs, totaling in $166.3m, are scheduled in July and September of 2022 at the shipyard of DSIC.

Fuel consumption of the VLCC pair is expected to be 5-7% lower than the VLCCs CMES built during 2018 and 2019.

The order adds to CMES’s order of four VLCCs at the yard last year. CMES owns a VLCC fleet of 53 vessels, the largest VLCC fleet in the world.

Eco features

Both of the ships will be fitted with eco features. One of the ships will be equipped with an air lubrication system while the other will be equipped with a sail propulsion system.

Sail propulsion test run

CMES and DSIC completed a test run of the sail propulsion system on its newbuild VLCC New Vitality in 2018.
