China Unveils Erhang Changqing, the Largest Pile-Driving Vessel Ever Built

8

On January 5, Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) delivered the Erhang Changqing, a new pile-driving vessel that is being hailed as the largest of its kind ever built. The delivery ceremony took place in Qidong City, Jiangsu Province.

Record-Breaking Capabilities

The Erhang Changqing sets new records for pile-lifting capacity and frame height. The vessel measures 130.5 meters long and features a 150-meter-high pile frame that can handle piles weighing up to 700 tons and measuring 7 meters in diameter. It is also designed to operate effectively in harsh weather conditions.

Advanced Technology and Design

The vessel incorporates several advanced technologies to improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact. It uses a diesel-electric hybrid DC networking system with supercapacitors. A key component is its 5,000-ton thrust, ultra-large oil cylinder, which was independently developed in China. The vessel’s advanced pile positioning system uses far-sea star station differential technology to achieve centimeter-level accuracy, which enhances both efficiency and safety.

Strategic Importance

ZPMC considers the Erhang Changqing a crucial asset for deep-sea hydraulic engineering and the offshore wind industry. The vessel is expected to play a vital role in the construction of major infrastructure projects, including large ports, cross-sea bridges, and foundations for offshore wind farms. This delivery is part of ZPMC’s broader strategy to develop smarter, greener, and more efficient engineering solutions for the global port and shipping sectors.
