The first ammonia-fueled tug, Yuan Tuo Yi, which has been handed over to its new owner, marks a big milestone in China’s maritime industry. Yuan Tuo Yi was designed and built by the Dalian University of Technology and the local shipyard COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry. The vessel is classed by both the China Classification Society and the American Bureau of Shipping, reports Baird Maritime.

Specifications and Performance

The key specifications of the tug are as follows:

  1. LOA: 38 meters
  2. Beam: 11 meters
  3. Design Draught: 3.7 meters
  4. Depth: 4.8 meters
  5. Gross Tonnage: 496

Powered by a dual-fuel engine, the tug has a total installed power of 4,100 kW. This is driven by an azimuthing thruster, and it can deliver a bollard pull of 60 tonnes with a design speed of 12.5 knots.

Emission Reduction and Ammonia Fuel System

Yuan Tuo Yi is also equipped with an exhaust gas aftertreatment system to further reduce emissions. It is powered by a modified 12V240H diesel engine supplied by CRRC Dachai, which now runs primarily on ammonia fuel. The ammonia is stored in two type C high-pressure tanks located on the main deck.

Firefighting Capabilities

Besides its green fuel capabilities, Yuan Tuo Yi is also designed with external firefighting equipment. The vessel features a main engine-driven pump that boosts its capability to fight fire.
