- Chinese, state-owned China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (CMJL) subsidiary, Dingheng shipyard, has ordered an integrated HyProp ECO propulsion solution from MAN Energy Solutions in connection with the building.
- The order includes options for an additional four vessels while the confirmed units are scheduled for delivery from mid-2023.
- AKA specialises in power supply, energy management and drive systems for marine applications.
- The system also offers an emergency propulsion mode with the same converter used as a PTH starter.
- This intelligent layout enables all components to be kept as small as possible.
Dingheng Shipyard, a subsidiary of China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (CMJL), has ordered an integrated HyProp ECO propulsion solution from MAN Energy Solutions for the construction of four dual-fuel 6,600-dwt package chemical tankers for Hamburg-based tanker operator John T. Essberger as reported by MAN Energy Solutions.
The deal includes options for four more vessels, with delivery beginning in mid-2023 for the confirmed units.
The scope of supply for each shipset authorised by the Finnish/Swedish 1A ice-class by MAN Energy Solutions includes:
- 1 × MAN 6L35/44DF diesel/gas-electric propulsion system, including GVU and plant equipment
- 1 × Renk gearbox RSVL-1100 including one primary-PTO/PTH/PTI
- 1 × MAN Alpha CP propulsion system including AT 3000 propulsion controls
- 1 × MAN HyProp ECO – AKA integrated electric system consisting of shaft machine, frequency converter, bow-thruster motor and related AC switchboard enabling tailored modes of operation.
MAN Energy Solutions
MAN Energy Solutions will provide the solution in association with Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA), in which it has a 40% stake.
AKA specialises in power supply, energy management and drive systems for marine applications.
Lex Nijsen, Vice President and Head of Marine Europe, MAN Energy Solutions, said: “We worked hard to build the case that a fully-integrated MAN solution built around the MAN HyPropECO system would better fulfil the owner’s requirements in terms of increasing energy efficiency and are very glad to have won this order.
The scope of supply also matches MAN Energy Solutions’ desire to increasingly become a supplier of complete solutions.
Jason Aspin, CEO of Aspin Kemp & Associates, said “We are very excited that the client, Essberger, has chosen this integrated solution developed through an early supplier involvement and a collaborative design effort, leading to higher efficiency and lower emissions, which are cornerstones of AKA’s design philosophy.”
Project background
The order aims to rebuild the fleet with newbuilds that can improve energy efficiency by 30%. E&S Tankers, a joint company between Essberger and Stolt Nielsen, will operate the new ships. John T. Essberger announced plans to invest heavily in a new fleet of contemporary ships in 2020 to trade in their key markets of Northwest Europe, the Baltic, and the Mediterranean.
System characteristics
The Essberger HyProp ECO system is a custom-made solution that emphasises efficiency and flexibility in electric equipment. The converter unit, for example, is designed to be employed in a variety of ways, including working the PTO when the propeller is on the combinator curve, as well as driving the bow thruster and supplying the ship with shore power. With the same converter used as a PTH starter, the system also has an emergency propulsion mode. All components may be kept as minimal as possible thanks to this clever design. Similarly, while not in use, integrated bypasses prevent losses in the power electronics.
The German Maritime Energy Transition
The new vessels’ hull design and equipment will be optimised, resulting in at least a 30% increase in energy efficiency, as well as the possibility to use a shore-power connection during cargo operations.
The German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is funding the new building project as part of the German government’s Mobility and Fuel Strategy implementation (MKS).
