Chinese Vessel Sinks Off Vietnam’s Northern Coast

On June 24, a Chinese vessel reportedly sank of Vietnam’s northern coast and its crew members were rescued.

What happened?

The Chinese vessel was enroute from Van Gia Port in the city of Mong Cai to Bach Long Island of China when it started taking on water.

The cargo vessel was carrying 116 tons of frozen buffalo meat sank three miles off the coast of the northern province of Quang Ninh.

Crew rescued

The rescue officials from Vietnamese coast guard were able to rescue the crew members but oil spill and frozen meat cargo has threatened the marine environment off the coast of Quang Ninh province.

Oil spills into Sea

Meanwhile, oil from the sunk vessel has begun spilling into the sea.

Nguyen Duc Manh, deputy head of the provincial maritime administration, said; “While we are taking actions to prevent any spill from spreading, we are also waiting for responses from the owner and captain of the Chinese ship on measures to deal with the problem”.

An investigation has been launched into the incident to determine the reason for the incident and to assess the environmental impact of the oil spill.
