The Maritime Battery Forum, in collaboration with CIMAC, has published the first of three white papers examining the environmental impact of batteries on deep-sea shipping, Maritime Battery Forum reports. This initial paper offers a detailed analysis of current use cases and application areas, drawing on the combined expertise of CIMAC’s Greenhouse Gas Strategy Group and other working groups.
Overview of Battery Applications in Deep-Sea Shipping
The white paper highlights the potential for batteries to contribute to the decarbonization of the maritime industry, despite the current limitations in achieving fully battery-powered, zero-emission vessels. The document consolidates existing literature, empirical data, and expert knowledge to present stakeholders with a neutral, state-of-the-art overview of battery applications.
Future Papers on Regulation and Energy Storage
Following this publication, the Maritime Battery Forum and CIMAC plan to release two more papers. The next paper, expected by the end of 2025, will focus on regulation, safety, and the human factor in battery usage on deep-sea vessels. The final paper will address energy storage, life-cycle assessment, and the operational range and limits of batteries in the maritime sector.
