9

  • CINS in conjunction with P&I Clubs and the TT Club has released comprehensive Guidelines for carriage of charcoal in Containers.
  • According to the guidance, charcoal shall only be shipped in packaged form. Packaging should be in good condition and must not be torn.

Members with ships engaged in carriage of dangerous goods in containers are recommended to refer to the latest CINS “Guidelines for the Safe Carriage of Charcoal in Containers”, published in conjunction with the International Group of P&I Clubs and the TT Club.

The Guidelines confirm that charcoal shall be transported in compliance with the requirements set out in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code). However, the practices outlined in the attached document include both IMDG Code provisions and additional precautions to ensure safe carriage. The document aims to improve safety during the carriage of charcoal, as well as to ensure that it is properly prepared, declared, packaged, and transported.

This publication supersedes all previous charcoal guidance published by CINS.
