ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for the Samsung Autonomous Navigation Assistance System (SAS). SAS is a partially autonomous navigation system designed to enhance situational awareness and prevent collisions and groundings through sensor fusion and electronic chart integration.
Compliance with Safety Guidelines
ClassNK reviewed SAS based on its “Guidelines for Automated/Autonomous Operation of Ships.” The system met all requirements, including task automation and backup protocols, ensuring compliance with safety standards.
Future Technological Verification
ClassNK is now conducting Technology Qualification (TQ) for SAS to assess its performance under real-world conditions. The organization aims to create a safer environment for autonomous technologies through continuous evaluation and standardization efforts.
