ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for an ammonia-fuelled LPG/NH₃ carrier jointly applied for by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. and MITSUI E&S Co., Ltd.
The certification confirms the vessel’s feasibility from regulatory and safety standpoints, marking a step forward in the adoption of zero-carbon marine fuels.
Ammonia as a Zero-Carbon Marine Fuel
Ammonia, which emits no CO₂ during combustion, is increasingly seen as a promising fuel to support maritime decarbonization. Research and development into ammonia-fuelled vessels are intensifying, with industry stakeholders working to address safety, technical, and operational challenges before large-scale deployment.
ClassNK has played a leading role in shaping international safety standards for ammonia use. In 2021, the society issued its “Guidelines for Ships Using Alternative Fuels” to set requirements for installation, controls, and safety devices to mitigate risks for ships, seafarers, and the environment.
Building on this, the IMO approved the “Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships Using Ammonia as Fuel” at MSC 109 in December 2024, following proposals submitted by ClassNK through the Government of Japan.
Certification Process and Risk Assessment
The AiP was granted after ClassNK reviewed the vessel’s design concept under Part C-2 of its guidelines for liquefied gas carriers using ammonia fuel and Part C-3 on additional safety measures for engine rooms.
The classification society also carried out a Hazard Identification (HAZID) study to assess risks. Upon confirming compliance with all prescribed requirements, the AiP was officially issued.
By granting this AiP, ClassNK reinforces its role in supporting the safe introduction of alternative fuels and accelerating maritime decarbonization. The classification society remains committed to advancing technology development and ensuring safety in the adoption of ammonia-fuelled ships, paving the way for broader industry implementation in the coming years.
