ClassNK Issues New Guidelines to Enhance Container Shipping Safety and Efficiency

8

  • ClassNK has released three updated guidelines covering weather-based route planning, anti-rolling devices, and container stowage standards.
  • The rules aim to prevent cargo collapse, optimize stowage, and improve ship stability under varying weather conditions.
  • By standardizing safety practices, the guidelines are expected to reduce risks, cut costs, and boost efficiency for shipping companies.

The new guideline on Safety of Maritime Cargo Based on Weather Forecasts outlines how operators can use short-term weather data to plan safe routes, balance loads, and assess lashing strength. Based on over one million cases of metocean data and AIS records, ClassNK has developed standardized evaluation methods and safety margins for containerized cargo operations.

Technical Standards for Anti-Rolling Devices

A second guideline establishes technical and inspection requirements for anti-rolling devices, including anti-rolling tanks. It also provides methods to evaluate the effectiveness of roll-reduction technologies, helping ships improve stability in rough seas.

Updated Container Stowage Rules

The third guideline, Container Stowage and Securing Arrangements (Edition 3.3), revises previous standards by incorporating weather forecasts and the roll-reduction effects of stabilization devices. These updates ensure that container stacks remain secure under dynamic operating conditions.

Industry Impact

According to ClassNK, the updated rules will reduce risks of cargo collapse, allow vessels to carry more containers safely, and improve stowage efficiency. By implementing these measures, shipping companies can lower operational risks, achieve cost savings, and ensure consistent safety standards across the industry.
