ClassNK Updates FuelEU Maritime FAQs to Support Compliance for EU-Calling Vessels

42

ClassNK has released the “FAQs on the FuelEU Maritime (4th Edition),” a crucial guide for shipping stakeholders navigating the complexities of new environmental regulations. This updated edition provides vital clarifications for ships over 5,000 gross tonnage calling at EU ports, which are subject to FuelEU Maritime regulations starting January 1, 2025.

Key Updates in the 4th Edition

The 4th Edition of the FAQs incorporates the latest clarifications derived from the European Maritime Safety Agency’s (EMSA) webinars and official Guidance Documents. Notable updates include:

  • Conditions for cumulative penalty increases in cases of repeated penalties: This section clarifies the circumstances under which penalties for non-compliance with FuelEU Maritime regulations can escalate due to repeated infringements, providing shipowners with a clearer understanding of potential financial repercussions.
  • Priority order of fuels in GHG intensity calculation: The updated FAQs outline a specific priority order for accounting for fuels when calculating Greenhouse Gas (GHG) intensity. By considering fuels in order of increasing GHG intensity, the guidance aims to help companies maximize the benefit of using low-GHG-intensity fuels, thereby optimizing their compliance strategies and potentially reducing penalties.

Supporting Decarbonization Efforts

FuelEU Maritime is an EU regulation specifically designed to promote the decarbonization of fuels used on board ships. Its entry into force signifies a significant step in the EU’s broader “Fit for 55” climate policy package, aiming to reduce GHG emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, with a long-term goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

ClassNK’s release of these comprehensive FAQs is part of its ongoing “ClassNK Transition Support Services,” aimed at assisting the shipping sector in adapting to and complying with stringent environmental regulations. By providing such detailed guidance, ClassNK contributes to fostering sustainable practices and facilitating the industry’s transition towards a more environmentally friendly future.
