The CMA CGM Group has confirmed its acquisition of Freightliner UK’s intermodal operations, marking a major expansion of its footprint in the UK rail freight sector, reports Multimodal.
The deal includes both rail and road transport services, inland terminals, and the rights to use the Freightliner brand.
CMA CGM’s strategy to strengthen sustainable and competitive transport
Set to complete in early 2026, subject to regulatory approval, the acquisition aligns with CMA CGM’s strategy to strengthen sustainable and competitive transport networks across Europe. While the intermodal business will be integrated into CMA CGM, other Freightliner divisions such as Heavy Haul, Rotterdam Rail Feeding, and operations in Poland and Germany will remain under current ownership.
Freightliner’s management team will continue to operate the intermodal division independently, maintaining its multi-user, multi-customer approach. This ensures continuity for existing clients while supporting CMA CGM’s growth in inland logistics.
A key objective of the acquisition is to support modal shift goals by moving more freight from road to rail. This will contribute to broader decarbonisation efforts and improve the sustainability of European and global supply chains.
