The CMA CGM Group, a global leader in shipping, logistics, air freight, and media, is partnering with the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC-3). This major event will be held in Nice from 9 to 13 June 2025, co-organized by France and Costa Rica. Following previous editions in New York (2017) and Lisbon (2022), UNOC-3 aims to accelerate global action for ocean protection. It seeks to bring together governments, businesses, NGOs, scientists, and local communities. Key goals include ratifying the BBNJ treaty, ending overfishing, protecting 30% of oceans by 2030, and reducing emissions from maritime transport. CMA CGM supports these goals as part of its commitment to achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050, as detailed in the recent report by CMA CGM Group.
CMA CGM’s Commitment to Ocean Protection and Maritime Decarbonization
CMA CGM has long been committed to protecting the environment. Since 2017, it has invested in a fleet powered by LNG, which supports the use of low-carbon fuels. By 2029, the Group will offer 153 low-carbon vessels to its customers for more sustainable trade. In 2019, it became the first major shipping company to avoid the Northern Sea Route to protect Arctic ecosystems.
To achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2050, CMA CGM is optimizing vessels and operations using artificial intelligence. It is also supporting the growth of sustainable marine fuels. The Group uses its assets and expertise to help protect marine life and fragile ecosystems.
As a global partner of UNOC-3, CMA CGM will share its knowledge through key discussions and projects. These will focus on ocean science, the blue economy, and biodiversity. The Group will take part in the “maritime decarbonization” pavilion at La Baleine, a space showcasing leading climate and biodiversity initiatives.
CMA CGM also runs local actions adapted to each region. These efforts support energy transition, coastal communities, and modern logistics. At UNOC-3, the Group will reaffirm its support for citizen science for ocean preservation.
CMA CGM’s Actions for Biodiversity and Sustainable Innovation
Protecting marine biodiversity is a key focus of CMA CGM’s environmental strategy. In the Mediterranean, the Group supports Biohut installations in Marseille and Khalifa ports, in partnership with Ecocean, to help marine species reproduce. In the Calanques National Park, it is restoring the Callelongue semaphore and involving employees in clean-up efforts.
The CMA CGM Foundation runs environmental education programs for 800 young people in Marseille. The Group also supports reforestation and turtle protection projects in overseas regions and Africa. These actions aim to restore coastal ecosystems and raise awareness about ocean conservation.
To reach carbon neutrality by 2050, CMA CGM follows an industrial and partnership-driven approach. It is upgrading 100 existing vessels and investing in new ships powered by LNG and methanol.
On land, the Group supports the Thassalia marine geothermal system, which powers the Jacques Saadé Tower in Marseille with low-carbon energy. The SmartShip program and Fleet Center use AI to improve vessel performance in real time. In logistics, CMA CGM is promoting low-carbon river transport, such as electric barges in Vietnam.
Startups supported by CMA CGM, including Aerleum and ZERO44, are driving innovation for a practical and measurable energy transition.
