30-year sub-concession Lyon container terminal
A consortium led by CMA CGM (67%), alongside Banque des Territoires (23%), CCI Lyon Métropole Saint-Etienne Roanne (4%), and CCI Métropolitaine Aix-Marseille-Provence (4%), has been awarded a 30-year sub-concession by the Compagnie Nationale du Rhône (CNR) to operate and develop the container terminal at Lyon Edouard Herriot Port.
The primary objective of the project is to bolster river and rail traffic along the Mediterranean-Rhône-Saône axis, leveraging Marseille’s port facilities through infrastructure upgrades, new service development, and the promotion of modal shift. The consortium aims to double river traffic at the terminal by 2032, strengthening connections between the Rhône-Alpes Region and the Port of Marseille, while supporting a diverse range of river operators and maritime carriers.
Thanks to its strategic location at the heart of Lyon and a crossroads for European and international trade, the port serves as a vital link in the region’s logistics chain. The planned enhancements are expected to improve its competitiveness and environmental performance, making it a key asset for sustainable transport in France.
The CMA CGM Group already operates terminals at several major French ports, including Le Havre, Fos-sur-Mer, Marseille, Montoir-de-Bretagne, and Dunkirk. The addition of Lyon Edouard Herriot Port to its portfolio further reinforces CMA CGM’s role in shaping France’s multimodal transport network.
