  • CMA CGM has launched Vietnam’s first fully electric container barge, powered by a solar farm and a charging station.
  • NIKE is the first customer to adopt this zero-emission river transport solution, with plans to expand the model to other clients and regions.
  • This initiative supports CMA CGM’s commitment to sustainable logistics, local job creation, and its goal to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2050.

CMA CGM, a global leader in maritime, land, air, and logistics services, has taken a significant step toward greener river transport in Southeast Asia. They have introduced Vietnam’s first fully electric container barge. This effort includes building a solar-powered charging station at Cai Mep port, near Ho Chi Minh City. To support this, CMA CGM partnered with Gemadept, a major logistics and port operator in Vietnam. Together, they formed a joint venture called Green River Transportation. This new company will run electric barge services in the Mekong Delta, strengthening their shared goal of sustainable logistics.

Clean Energy and Logistics Innovation on Vietnam’s Rivers

CMA CGM, through its CMA Ships and R&D teams, developed the new electric barge powered by a solar farm at the Gemalink terminal in Cai Mep. This solar facility can produce up to 1 GWh of clean electricity annually. The electric barge will cut CO₂ emissions by 778 tons each year on the 180 km route between Binh Duong Province and Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu.

NIKE is the first customer to use this zero-emission barge for shipments between its manufacturing sites and the Gemalink terminal. CMA CGM plans to extend this low-carbon model to other clients and regions where waterways are vital. The electric barge is expected to start operations in early 2026.

CMA CGM has had a strong presence in Vietnam since 1989, with multiple offices, services, and employees. This project aligns with the company’s goals to boost sustainable infrastructure, create local jobs, and contribute to its Net Zero Carbon strategy by 2050.
