CMA CGM, the French shipping conglomerate, has taken delivery of the 15,000 TEU, Kimberley, adding to its huge fleet of LNG-powered container ships as reported by LNG Prime.
Container vessel
The dual-fuel ultra-large container vessel was delivered on Monday by CSSC’s Jiangnan Shipyard.
This is the second of five LNG-powered vessels with a capacity of 15,000 TEU that Jiangnan will construct for CMA CGM.
CMA CGM received the first vessel in this series, the LNG-powered Patagonia, in September.
Three more LNG-powered ships, the CMA CGM Everglade, Galapagos, and Greenland, will be added to the fleet.
According to the French company, these containerships will be able to transport up to 15,254 TEUs, including 1,800 reefers, with a length of 366 metres and a width of 51 metres.
Investing extensively
They will all travel between Asia and the Mediterranean under the French flag, serving CMA CGM’s Mediterranean Club Express (MEX) route.
CMA CGM is investing extensively in LNG as a fuel, and by 2024, it intends to have at least 44 LNG-powered ships in its fleet.
The company has partnered with Shell to complete the world’s first bio-LNG bunkering operation in Rotterdam.
While calling at the Rotterdam Short Sea Terminals, Shell-chartered LNG London bunkered the Containerships Aurora, a 1,400 TEU LNG-powered vessel, with a roughly 10% blend of low carbon bio-LNG.
